HERTFORD — The John A. Holmes girls’ basketball team had the nearly unstoppable inside-outside duo of Le’Asia Stanley and Jamillian Johnson.

The freshman/sophomore duo combined for 33 points as the Aces defeated Perquimans 59-40 in the Albemarle Athletic Conference girls basketball tournament semifinal at Perquimans County High School Thursday night.

Edenton, the No. 2 seed, advances to the tournament championship game to face No. 4 seed Manteo (13-6) today at 6 p.m. at Perquimans.

The Lady Redskins upset No. 1 seed Washington County Wednesday to advance to the championship game.

The second quarter proved to be the deciding period as Edenton outscored Perquimans 22-6 in the frame.

Much of the points were by Stanley, a forward, inside along with Johnson connected on a pair of 3-pointers.

Edenton’s Kaci Drew also contributed in the second period as she scored four of her 10 points in the second.

Stanley scored 10 of her team-high 18 points in the second quarter.

Johnson, a sophomore guard, followed with 15 points in the game.

Edenton (16-8) led 40-20 at halftime.

The final two quarters was played at a slower pace as neither team scored a point nearly three minutes into the third quarter.

Perquimans (17-8) was unable to get quality shots in the paint as Stanley or Johnson were active defensively to alter shots.

Both Edenton players recorded multiple blocks in the game.

Jada Modlin led Perquimans, the defending tournament champions, with 13 points, while McKayle Knapp followed with 10 points.

It was an up-tempo first quarter for both teams as Perquimans jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the quarter.

Both teams would trade the lead in the quarter as defense for the Lady Pirates led to early baskets.

Edenton would as take advantage of Perquimans’ turnovers and control the boards as the Lady Aces got multiple second-chance point opportunities.

Following an Anna Bass basket that gave Edenton a 9-8 lead, Edenton led by six points and took an 18-14 lead into the second.

Edenton will meet Manteo for a third time this season as the Lady Aces swept the two-game regular season series.
