The past 12 months saw athletes, teams and coaches reach milestones in multiple sports in the area.
Those individual triumphs is the No. 7 sports story of 2018.
The first milestone of the year occurred in January on the wrestling mat.
Pasquotank senior Javiaughn Basnight secured his 100th career win during a tri-match against Hertford County and Northeastern.
Basketball also got into the milestones during the month of January.
Former basketball players Damar Sutton (Northeastern) and JR Williams (Camden) scored their 1,000th career points.
Sutton passed the 1K mark against St. David's, while Williams did so against Great Bridge (Va.).
Both basketball players would be joined by Pasquotank's Amaya Simpson, who also scored her 1,000th career point in February.
The accomplishments would continue into the 2018 fall season on the volleyball courts.
Perquimans' Cayce Copley recorded her 1,000th career kill against Gates in late August.
Nearly two months later Currituck's Kamryn Johnson passed the 1,000 career kills mark en route to leading the Lady Knights to the state championship.
Perquimans' volleyball coach Kristie Thach also made history as she secured her 200th career win as a coach against Washington County in early October.
The end of October saw the John A. Holmes football team celebrate playing its 1,000th high school football game against Albemarle Athletic Conference foe Manteo on Oct. 25.
The Aces celebrated the accomplishment by securing a 62-20 win at Manteo.
A milestone also occurred at the college ranks.
Elizabeth City State women's basketball player Jalyn Brown scored her 1,000th career point against Newport News Apprentice School on Nov. 28.
Brown, a senior, scored the basket in the early moments of the game against the Builders at the Vaughan Center.
The game was stopped to honor Brown for reaching the milestone.
Just as the year began with a win milestone in wrestling, the latest milestone occurred on the mat in December.
Northeastern wrestler Jonathan Ward, a senior, secured his 100th career win at a wrestling tournament at Ocean Lakes High School in Virginia Beach, Virginia on Dec. 21.
