Stanley, Aces defeat visiting Knights

EDENTON — The John A. Holmes boys basketball team opened its 2018-19 season with a 68-53 win against Currituck Thursday night at John A. Holmes High School.
Ten of the 14 players that dressed, scored and everyone played in the opening game for the Aces (1-0) in the non-conference matchup.
Edenton was led by Mitjonta Stanley, who scored 14 points and Zion Boston with 11 points.
Currituck (2-3) was led by Ricky Owens’ 18 points and Carmillo Burton scoring 10 points.
John A. Holmes 51, Currituck 48: The Lady Aces (1-0) held off visiting Currituck (3-3) Thursday evening in Edenton.
Trinity Evans led Currituck with 24 points, while Tyana Peebles followed with 16 points.
The Pasquotank girls and Camden boys finished in first place at a swim meet Wednesday.
In the girls meet, Pasquotank scored 75 points, Camden was second with 46 points and Northeastern was third with 44 points.
Camden won the boys meet with 66 points, Northeastern was second with 44 points and Pasquotank was third with 24 points.
In the girls meet Pasquotank earned wins from its 200-medley relay of Sophie Clarkson, Jesse Dennis, Vy Bui and Tami Brock, Aalysia McClease in the 200 freestyle, Clarkson in the 50 freestyle the 200-freestyle relay of Clarkson, McClease, Dennis and Alex Quintero, Bui in the 100 breaststroke and the 400-freestyle relay of Brock, Dennis, Clarkson and McClease.
The Lady Bruins secured wins from Paige Strecker in the 400 freestyle, while the Northeastern girls had wins from Julianna Connor in the 200 individual medley and the 100 backstroke with Abby Furst in the 100 freestyle.
Camden’s boys secured wins from its 200-medley relay of Gabe Snyder, Gabriel Keeling, Christopher Praisler and Nathan Royal, Snyder in the 200 freestyle, Praisler in the 50 freestyle, Keeling in the 100 butterfly, Royal in the 100 freestyle, White in the 400 freestyle and the 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams of Snyder, Praisler, Keeling and Royal.
Northeastern’s Nathan McKecuen won the 100 breaststroke.
Pasquotank’s 400 freestyle relay of Zach Evans, Ian Ford, Chandler Walton and Nick Payne finished third in the event.
