INSTITUTE, W.Va. — The Elizabeth City State men's basketball team defeated the University of Virginia-Wise 80-60 Saturday afternoon at the Earl Lloyd Classic on the campus of West Virginia State.

Shyheid Petteway led the Vikings (1-1) with a game-high 32 points on 12 of 17 shooting from the field.

John Maynor followed with 12 points, while Zaccheus Hobbs scored 10 points in the win.

ECSU shot 56.6 percent from the field and scored 40 points in the paint.

The Vikings scored 18 points off of 12 UVa.-Wise turnovers.

Michal Seals led Virginia-Wise with 27 points and eight assists.

The Cavaliers struggled shooting from the field as they made only 30.3 percent of their shots in the loss.

ECSU led by 23 points in the second half.

The Vikings return to the court in Elizabeth City Wednesday and will host Winston-Salem State in a designated non-conference game at the Vaughan Center.

West Virginia State 89, ECSU 82: The Vikings (0-1) lost their season opener to the host Yellow Jackets at the Earl Lloyd Classic Friday.

Zaccheus Hobbs scored a game-high 29 points on 10 of 14 shooting, made all seven free-throw attempts with three assists, three rebounds and two steals.

Shyheid Petteway, Justin Faison and John Maynor added 11 points each for ECSU.

The Vikings committed 22 turnovers in the loss.

West Virginia State (1-0) scored 29 points off of the ECSU turnovers.

Gus Stone led West Virginia State with 21 points.

Pat Johnson-Agwu added 18 points, while Glen Abram and Sable Cooper posted 12 points each in the win.


Gannon 91, ECSU 89, OT: The Lady Vikings lost their season opener in overtime at the PSAC/CIAA Challenge at Gannon University Saturday afternoon in Erie, Pa.

With the game tied 89-89, Gannon's Tori Obenrader scored the game-winning basket in the final moments in overtime.

Naterria Luster scored a game-high 29 points with nine rebounds in the win.

Jalyn Brown scored 18 points with six rebounds, Asia Deal had 15 points and Jaliyuah Giggetts added 11 points for ECSU (0-1).

Gannon (1-0) overcame committing 30 turnovers in the contest.

Chelsea Rourke led the Golden Knights with 16 points in the win.

The Lady Vikings are scheduled to face Slippery Rock today at the Challenge.

Penn State York 63, Mid-Atlantic Christian 43: The Lady Mustangs (0-2) lost their first game at the Davis College tournament Friday.

Mid-Atlantic Christian 84, Word of Life Bible 31: The Lady Mustangs (1-2) cruised to the win at the Davis College tournament Saturday.

MACU returns to action in Elizabeth City Tuesday to face Greensboro College at Chesson Gym.
