The Elizabeth City State football team will have to wait at least another week to play a game.

According to a news release from Fayetteville State University Wednesday afternoon, the football contest between ECSU and Fayetteville State scheduled for Saturday in Fayetteville is canceled.

The release from Fayetteville State says: Hurricane Florence had a major impact on the city of Fayetteville, the North Carolina seaboard and the major arteries connected to it.

Due to the flooding and road closures in-and-around Fayetteville, the Department of Athletics at Fayetteville State University has canceled this weekend’s CIAA football game against Elizabeth City State University.

“I applaud the efforts of campus facilities and those of the surrounding community with the attempt to get things back to normal,” said Director of Athletics Anthony Bennett. “I do not want to put our student-athletes in any dangerous situations with the road closures in trying to return to campus.”

Sections of Interstate-95 and roadways within Fayetteville are currently closed due to the flooding of the Cape Fear River, Little River, Cross Creek River and other arteries. Fayetteville State University is expecting the return of students on Sunday, Sept. 23.

The Vikings (1-1) were scheduled to host Winston-Salem State at the Down East Viking Football Classic Saturday, Sept. 15 in Rocky Mount, but due to Hurricane Florence’s expected landfall onto eastern North Carolina around that time, the non-conference game with the Rams was canceled.

ECSU is scheduled to host Saint Augustine’s Saturday, Sept. 29 in Elizabeth City.

The Vikings’ last game was on Sept. 8, which was a 51-6 loss at North Carolina-Pembroke.
