NEW KENT, Va. — The Elizabeth City State men’s golf team finished fifth place in the 2018 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship tournament at The Club at Viniterra on Friday afternoon.

The Vikings entered Friday’s second and final round in third place, but as a team shot a 61-over par in the second round to drop to fifth place overall.

ECSU finishes with a two-day team total of 104-over par 680, as the team posted a 43-over par 331 in the opening round on Thursday.

Livingston College claimed the title in the team competition, after posting team rounds of 29-over par Thursday and 30-over par Friday to finish with a total of 59-over par 635.

Virginia Union finished second place 11 shots behind Livingstone with a two-day total of 70-over 646.

Both St. Augustine’s and Chowan passed the Vikings in the team standings during the tournament’s final round.

St. Augustine’s moved up two spots to finish third at 47-over 671, while Chowan jumped up three spots on the final day to finish fourth with a total of 99-over 675.

The Vikings finished just five shots behind Chowan for fourth, as Johnson C. Smith came in five shots behind ECSU in sixth place at 109-over 685.

Fayetteville State dropped three spots in the final round to finish seventh with a two-round team total of 126-over par 702, while Virginia State rounded out the field in eighth at 154-over 730.

Individually, ECSU was led by Tyler Futrell, as the senior finished the tournament tied for fourth with a two round total of 11-over par 155, just two shots behind the individual champions.

Futrell entered the final round of the tournament in second place and just one shot off the lead after posting an opening round 3-over 75.

On day two, Futrell struggled early, going 4-over par on the first four holes of the round and finished with an 8-over 80 to finish tied with Johnson C. Smith’s DeJuan Powell.

Taylor Guarracino and William Fallon both finished tied for 22nd overall with two-day totals of 29-over 173.

Guarracino, a junior posted a a first round 14-over 86 and concluded the tournament with a 15-over 87.

Fallon finished the tournament with a 16-over par 88 after the junior opened the tournament with a 13-over 85.

Sophomore Alex O’Connor posted rounds of 85 on Thursday and 94 on Friday to finish the tournament in 26th with a two day total of 35-over 179 for the Vikings.

Derek Beach, a junior, finished in 40th overall for ECSU after posting a 134 on the opening day of the tournament and a 116 on Friday.

Fayetteville State’s Isiah Shaw and Virginia Union’s Robel Woldagabriel finished the tournament tied for first individually at 9-over par 153.

Shaw posted rounds of 74 Thursday and 79 on Friday, while Woldagabriel shot a 78 in the first round and jumped up five spots on Friday with a 3-over 75.

Livingstone’s Phillip Harrison finished in second, one shot behind the leaders at 10-over par 154 and one shot ahead of Futrell.
