GATESVILLE — Perquimans pitchers Devin Mathis and Chase Ward posted a combined seven strikeouts as the Pirates defeated Albemarle Athletic Conference rival Gates 5-0 on Tuesday night at Gates County High School.

Mathis, a senior, went four innings on the mound and registered four strikeouts and gave up two hits, while Ward, a sophomore, wen three innings, gave up three hits and struck out three Red Barons in the victory for Perquimans (13-3, 7-1 AAC).

Jacob Godfrey, a junior, had a hit, recorded a sacrifice fly and was credited with two RBIs, Braden Jordan went 2-for-4 with a run scored and Mason Votava also went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored in the win.

Gates (12-2, 5-2 AAC) was shut out for the first time this season.

The win for the Pirates moves them into sole possession of first place in the league.

The two teams will meet again on Friday at Gates.

Currituck 16, Northeastern 1: The Currituck baseball team defeated Northeastern in five innings on Tuesday night in a Northeastern Coastal Conference matchup at Currituck County High School.

Currituck pitchers Austin Pace and William Langley did not surrender an earned run and limited the Eagles (2-7, 0-3 NCC) to a hit in the victory.

Pace finished with six strikeouts, while Langley posted four strikeouts.

Pace helped his own cause at the plate by going 2-for-4, while posting an RBI and a run scored.

Cole Bates had a hit, scored two runs and recorded two RBIs, while Austin Warren went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI for Currituck (9-1, 3-0 NCC).

Andy Krause reached base three times, while recording a hit and scoring three times.

Brent Parks had the only hit in the game for Northeastern.

The two teams will meet again on Friday in Elizabeth City.

Hertford County 8, Pasquotank 2: Hertford County broke open a 1-1 game in the sixth inning with seven runs as the Bears secured the league win in Elizabeth City on Tuesday night.

Jared Weeks, Jason Stallings and Brandon Hoffman all had hits for Pasquotank (2-13, 0-3 NCC).

The Panthers scored a run in the first and the seventh innings.

Pasquotank committed three errors.

Evan Lassiter, a senior, had a double with two RBIs for Hertford County (6-8, 3-0 NCC).

The Bears got contributions from Parker Bradley and Harrison Spence who each had two hits with an RBI.



Currituck 12, Northeastern 2: The Lady Knights (6-3, 3-0 Northeastern Coastal Conference) won their sixth consecutive game in six innings against Northeastern at home on Tuesday night.

Northeastern (4-5, 1-2 NCC) led 2-1 after the first inning, but Currituck responded with three runs in the bottom of the second inning.

Faith Hughes and Haley Caldwell were each credited with an RBI, while Kylee Schojan posted two RBIs and scored a run.

Morgan Owens went 1-for-2 with a run scored and two RBIs, while Ashlyn Richards had a hit with an RBI for Currituck in the victory.



Currituck's Nicholas Lapham won his second consecutive match on Tuesday at Beechwood Country Club in Ahoskie.

Roanoke Rapids, John A. Holmes, Northeastern, Hertford County First Flight and Manteo had athletes at the meet.

Lapham was the low medalist with a 78.

Hertford County's Grayson Waterfield was second with a 79.

Northeastern Connor Stevenson and John A. Holmes' Kolby Jones were the top individual golfers for their respective teams.

Roanoke Rapids won the team competition with a 340, Hertford County was second with 354 and Hertford County was third with 389.

Edenton was fourth with 397, while Manteo finished fifth with 417.
