HERTFORD — The Elizabeth City State men’s golf team completed the first round of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Northern Division tournament on Monday.

The first day of the two-day competition took place on the Sound Golf Links at Albemarle Plantation.

The opening round was impacted by a steady rain on a cold day on the par 72 course that measures 6,522 yards.

Along with ECSU, the tournament features Chowan, Fayetteville State, Johnson C. Smith Livingstone College, Saint Augustine’s University, Virginia State and Virginia Union.

ECSU, the tournament host, was led by senior Tyler Futrell, who shot 5-over-par 77 and is tied for fourth place with Chowan’s Christian Fleetwood.

Futrell has been named an all-CIAA performer the past three seasons.

The Vikings received individual scores from sophomore Alex O’Connor who shot 9-over-par 81, William Fallon who was 13-over-par 85, Taylor Guarracino who was 15-over-par 87 and Derrick Beach who was 70-over-par 142.

Chowan leads the team competition with a combined team score of 30-over-par 318.

Livingstone is second at 36-over-par 324.

ECSU is third at 42-over-par 330, Fayetteville State is fourth at 46-over-par 334, Saint Augustine’s is fifth at 54-over-par 342.

Johnson C. Smith is sixth at 59-over-par 347, Virginia Union is seventh at 62-over-par 350 and Virginia State is eighth at 101-over-par 389.

Chowan’s Steven Rhinard and Fayetteville State’s Isaiah Shaw are tied for first place individually at 3-over-par 75.

Livingstone’s Marcus Thompson is third at 4-over-par 76.

The second and final day of the tournament is today on the Sound Golf Links at Albemarle Plantation.

The final round is scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m.

The tournament is ECSU’s final scheduled competition before the CIAA championship tournament at The Club at Viniterra in New Kent, Virginia, which begins on April 19.
