Elizabeth City State’s basketball teams entered Monday’s contests at home against Winston-Salem State having not played in a combined 30 days.
With the extended time off, it would be understandable to see the teams get off to a slow start, but that was not the case as both teams performed well and came away with their first conference wins of the season.
Before the break, the teams each fell short in their first two Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association contests of the season.
The Lady Vikings, who had not played since a loss on Dec. 16, a 22-day stretch without a game, did not take long to prove they were ready to return to action.
ECSU (7-6, 1-2 CIAA) jumped out to a commanding 23-3 lead after the opening quarter and led the entire game on their way to a 65-46 victory.
The team came away with the 19-point victory, despite being outscored by five points in the second half, as they began the third quarter with a 35-11 lead.
The Lady Vikings were led by a balanced scoring attack, as nine different players scored points in the win.
Jalyn Brown led the way with a game-high 12 points while playing a game-high 35 minutes for ECSU.
Devona Stell came just short of recording another double-double, as she finished the game with 11 points and nine rebounds, eight of which came on the defensive end.
Anaya Eason also finished in double digits for the Lady Vikings with 10 points, while Alexis Fowler scored nine points.
As a team, ECSU shot 38.9 percent from the floor, while holding the Lady Rams to just 27.8 percent shooting.
The Lady Vikings scored 20 of their 65 points from the free throw line, going 20-of-35 from the charity stripe as a team.
The men’s team followed with a strong performance of their own, topping Winston-Salem State 78-66 behind a strong second half performance.
The team was playing their first game in eight days following a win on Dec. 30.
ECSU (5-5, 1-2 CIAA) led by as many as eight points in the first half, but the Rams cut into the deficit late in the opening half, as the Vikings took a 35-34 lead into the second half.
After falling behind 42-41 early in the second half, the Vikings went on a 8-0 run to take a 49-42 lead and held the lead for the rest of the game.
ECSU was led by John Maynor, as the sophomore finished the game with 19 points and six rebounds, shooting 6-of-12 from the floor and 5-of-5 from the free throw line.
Freshman Zaccheus Hobbs finished with 16 points in the win, including going 9-of-10 at the free throw line.
As a team, the Vikings finished the game 20-of-28 at the line and shot 46.4 percent from the floor.
Corey Mendez and Joseph Allen both finished in double-digits for ECSU with 11 and 10 points respectively.
Both teams return to action Saturday when they host Chowan for a pair of CIAA contests with the women’s game beginning at 2 p.m. and the men’s game following at 4 p.m.
