RALEIGH — The Elizabeth City State men’s basketball team lost to Shaw University 105-85 on Thursday night at Shaw.

John Maynor scored a team-high 22 points with three rebounds in the loss for ECSU (3-3, 1-0 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association).

The contest was the CIAA opener for the Vikings.

Shaw (6-4, 2-0 CIAA) had for players score in double figures as DeAngelo Stephens-Bell led the Bears with 24 points with six assists and five rebounds.

Krishaun Myers followed with 23 points, Savon Goodman had 19 points and DaVaughn Kelsie had 17 points.

Along with Maynor, Zaccheus Hobbs (17 points), Shyheid Petteway (11 points) and Shykeef Daniels (10 points) scored in double figures for ECSU.

Defensively, it was a struggle for the Vikings as Shaw shot a robust 56.3 percent from the field.

ECSU struggled from behind the 3-point line as the Vikings only made 9-of-36 shots from deep in the game.

The Vikings will conclude their CIAA trip to Raleigh today as they face Saint Augustine’s.

ECSU lost to the Falcons on Nov. 26, which was a 58-52 decision.

The contest in late November was designated as a non-conference matchup at a basketball holiday classic at Virginia Union.

Norfolk State 112, Mid-Atlantic Christian 34: The Mustangs trailed 60-15 at halftime of the contest at Norfolk State University on Thursday night.

Although Norfolk State (1-9), a NCAA Division I program, counts the game, the Mustangs do not count the game to their overall record and designated the contest as an exhibition.

Jaelin Thomas led MACU (4-8) with 15 points.

Derrik Jamerson scored a game-high 24 points for the Spartans.

MACU returns to action on Jan. 11 in Newport News against Apprentice School.


Shaw 72, Elizabeth City State 68: The Lady Vikings (6-5, 0-1 CIAA) were unable to complete the comeback against Shaw on Thursday evening at Shaw.

ECSU trailed 64-60 with around five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.

The Lady Vikings went on a 5-0 run and took a 65-64 lead following a basket by Devona Stell.

Shaw (3-6, 1-1 CIAA) retook the lead on a 3-pointer by Raquel Kellow with 3:15 to go.

After the basket, the Lady Bears never trailed the remainder of the contest.

Jalyn Brown led ECSU with 26 points with three steals and three assists and six rebounds.

Stell scored 10 points with four rebounds, while Bridgejae Patterson added 10 points and seven rebounds.

LaQuisha Taylor led Shaw with 22 points and 12 rebounds, while Lervencia Johnson-Tyler added 14 points and eight rebounds.

The Lady Vikings face Saint Augustine’s today at 2 p.m.

ECSU defeated the Lady Falcons 73-55 in a basketball classic at Fayetteville State on Nov. 25.
