Angie Walston, Teacher of the Year at White Oak Elementary School, has been named 2018-2019 Edenton-Chowan Schools Teacher of the Year.

Walston will advance to regional competition as part of the North Carolina Teacher of the Year Program.

A 2nd grade teacher, she has been teaching for 20 years, the last four of those years at White Oak Elementary School.

“From visits in her classroom, it is obvious that Mrs. Walston works hard to extend her teaching beyond classroom walls, holding students accountable for their learning and the choices they make,” said Dr. Rob Jackson, Superintendent. “Her classroom has a caring atmosphere where students work independently and in groups engaged in relevant and meaningful learning activities.”

Walston began teaching at White Oak after she and her family moved "back home" to Chowan County from Wilson. Prior to teaching at White Oak Elementary, she taught at Wells Elementary and East End Elementary Schools in Wilson.

She holds a bachelors degree and a masters degree from East Carolina University. She is currently a beginning teacher coach and mentor at White Oak Elementary and serves as supervising teacher for student interns for East Carolina University.

Among her other professional accomplishments, Walston holds National Board Certification in Elementary Education, has received grants from the Edenton-Chowan Education Foundation and Donors Choose for flexible seating in her classroom. She is a Rotary Club Award recipient, and she is a recipient of the Sallie Mae First Class Teacher Award.
