Two Perquimans County Middle School teachers toured Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, South Carolina, in early December at an event offered by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.
While there, Linae Midgette, Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) teacher and Lisa Sawyer, math teacher, toured the F-16 hangar and static display, interviewed with a fighter jet pilot, and participated in a ballistic missile defense briefing, along with a discussion on Missile Defense systems, among other activities.
“This was such an awesome experience for us, and our students could completely benefit from learning what we did,” Sawyer said in a school district news release. “Living near a Coast Guard Base and having Elizabeth City State University nearby offering aviation, we already have the next steps available to our scholars; we just need to provide the foundation and help them get their foot in the door.”
Midgette said, “This experience was really eye-opening to how STEM is related to our military, aviation, and their everyday operations. Most students would not realize how much science and math is needed to protect and serve our country.”
Jill Cohen, Perquimans Director of Career Technical Education noted that only eight people were chosen for the professional development experience.
“Our PQ teachers had an opportunity to gain insight into how their curriculums develop workplace skills that support the military or the private sector,” she said. “This was an elite training experience which will continue to impact our students’ learning as the teachers integrate their learning into their classrooms.”
