New commercial spaces will soon be available at the new E-City Plaza, which is taking shape on Ehringhaus Street in Elizabeth City.

Plans are to have the plaza, located at 511-513 West Ehringhaus Street, open this spring, owner and developer Wadeea Alzawquari, of New Bern, said in a phone interview Wednesday. Alzawquari said he’s got three interested tenants already and will offer seven total spaces.

The new commercial center is going into the former Ace Hardware store that closed in mid-2016. Since buying and starting renovation at the site last year, Alzawquari has taken the building down to a shell — basically walls and roof — and rebuilt it.

“Almost everything is brand new,” he said.

That includes electrical and heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. The new HVAC system is nearly installed, he noted.

Alzawquari also said most of his spaces are 1,800 to 2,000 square feet, with one 2,200-2,300 square-foot space available.

Alzawquari declined to say how much he's investing in the building — city officials have estimated $560,000 — but said his purpose is to help create new businesses.

He also said three businesses are considering moving in. While not naming them, he said they include a mobile phone store, a seafood market, and a Chinese restaurant.

Elizabeth City City Council supports Alzawquari’s project, awarding it a $10,000 Business Improvement Grant last year.
