EDENTON — Edenton police have issued an arrest warrant for a suspect in last week’s stabbing death that they’re describing as “extremely dangerous.”

Andrew Jerome Cooper, 31, of Browns Summit, a small community in Guilford County, is wanted in connection with the stabbing death of Dwight Coston on Feb. 14, police said Tuesday.

According to police Chief Henry King, Coston was stabbed near North Granville and West Carteret streets about 3 p.m. He was transported to Vidant Chowan Hospital in Edenton, where he died.

Police have described Cooper as black, 6 feet tall with black hair and brown eyes. A cash reward has been offered for information leading to his arrest. Anyone encountering him is asked to call 9-1-1, police said.

King said State Bureau of Investigation agents are working with Edenton police on the probe into Coston’s death. He asked that anyone who may have witnessed the incident that led to Coston’s death to contact Special Agent Norman at 919-662-4500 or him at 482-9890. Witnesses also may email the Edenton Police Department at edentonpd.com.

According to court records, Coston had a previous criminal history. He had convictions for taking indecent liberties with a child, failing to register as a sex offender, felony breaking and entering, possession of a firearm by a felon and drug possession.
