What is the title of the only X-rated film to have won an Academy Award?
If you know the answer without having to use your smartphone then you should have participated in Friday’s Trivia Night fundraiser for the Boys & Girls Club of the Albemarle.
About 100 trivia buffs packed the lobby at Museum of the Albemarle for an evening of trivia that also raised money to support the club’s programs. The event began around 7 p.m. with drinks and hor d’oeuvres and the trivia rounds began an hour later and ran until 10 p.m.
The winning team in the Boys & Girls Club’s first Trivia Night event was Paul SimZins. The team included the following couples: Chris and Whitney Paullet, Dave and Leah Simpson and Skip and Robin Zinsmeister.
The event raised funds by charging an entry fee of $25 per person, plus hosting a silent auction and a cash bar. The top prize was four tickets to the UNC-Chapel Hill basketball game against Syracuse, plus a $100 cash team prize.
Elizabeth Mitchell, the club’s executive director, estimated Saturday afternoon that the event raised about $6,500 for the club’s after-school and summer programs.
“I was really, really pleased with the turnout,” Mitchell said. “I think we had about 100 people. Everybody said we should do it again next year, so I think we will.”
The answer to the question about the only X-rated film to win the Oscar was “Midnight Cowboy”. The 1969 film starred Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman and won an Oscar for Best Picture. The question was one of two asked by moderator Billy Caudle to break a tie between seven teams in the opening round, which was movie trivia.
Mitchell said none of the teams answered the question correctly. The other question in the tie-breaker was, Where did Tom Hanks’s character in the movie “Cast Away” work? That answer was FedEx.
Other examples of questions from the movie round included:
Who directed the 1993 film, “Schindler’s List”? (Steven Spielberg).
What is the name of the second Indiana Jones movie? (Temple of Doom).
What is the name of the classic thriller that starred Roy Scheider as Police Chief Martin Brody? (Jaws).
About 15 teams with four to six players each participated in the Trivia Night event. The event also attracted a number of spectators who were not part of a team but were watching and having a good time.
The teams were asked 10 questions each in five rounds, and each round focused on a different subject. In addition to the movie round, the other four rounds were music, sports, North Carolina and one based on the former TV show, “Are You Smarter than a Fifth-grader?”
Mitchell also thanked the sponsors that helped host the club’s first Trivia Night fundraiser. They included Biggs Cadillac Buick GMC, Southern Bank, Todd’s Pharmacy, Sentara Albemarle Medical Center, Towne Bank and Towne Insurance and the Hornthal, Riley, Ellis and Maland law firm.
