CURRITUCK – Currituck County residents may no longer have to drive to Elizabeth City or Manteo to buy a license plate or to pay their vehicle registration fees. That’s if all goes according to a plan to open a license plate agency in the county.

John Brockwell, a spokesman for the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles, said last week that applications are being sought for someone to operate a license plate agency in Currituck. However, it’s undecided at the time when that office will be ready or where it will be located.

When opened, the new license plate office will be the first one in Currituck, as Brockwell cited both county growth, as well as customer demand as reasons for the needed location.

In North Carolina, the DMV oversees the license plate offices, but they're managed privately on a contract basis.

Brockwell said it is hoped the location will be up and running by mid to late spring, 2019. He said the person who is awarded the contract is going to decide where the office will be located.

License plate offices also offer speciality license plates, renewal license plate decals, vehicle registration services and title transactions. Statewide, there are 125 license plate agencies in operation.

The DMV's policy is to open applications to operate a new license plate agency at a point following the expiration or end of a contract, or when a new or additional agency is needed. The applications, forms MVR-93 or MVR-93AA, can be found online at ncdot.gov, plus also by calling 919-615-6053.
