Elizabeth City police are investigating the shooting death of a Hertford County man early Thursday as a homicide.
Rocky Lee Bailey Jr., 34, of Apt. 2, the 800 block of Garrett Street, Ahoskie, died at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia, after he was shot in Elizabeth City, police spokeswoman Barbara Morgan said in a press release.
According to Morgan, police responded to a report of a shooting in the 200 block of Roanoke Avenue about 6:02 a.m. When officers arrived, they found Bailey, who had suffered a gunshot wound to the chest.
Bailey was transported first to Sentara Albemarle Medical Center, then flown by Nightingale helicopter to the Norfolk hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later, Morgan said.
Morgan, citing the ongoing police investigation, declined to say if police know why Bailey was in Elizabeth City or if investigators have any suspects in his shooting.
City police are asking anyone with information about Bailey’s shooting to call police at 252-335-4321 or Pasquotank Crime Line at 252-335-5555.
