Elizabeth City police have arrested a local man in connection with the shooting of a city motorist early last month.
Stephon Trevor Ellis, 30, of the 800 block of N. Road St., Elizabeth City, was arrested Tuesday and charged in the June 4 shooting of Darryl Kevin Mullen Jr., police spokesman Lamont Butts said.
Police announced last week that warrants had been served seeking Ellis’ arrest in Mullen’s shooting. Butts said Ellis turned himself in.
Ellis is charged with attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, discharging a weapon into an occupied property causing serious bodily injury, and possession of a firearm by a felon. He was being held at Albemarle District Jail on Tuesday in lieu of a $650,000 secured bond.
According to Butts, police responded to the 600 block of Massachusetts Avenue shortly before 5:30 p.m. on June 4 following a report of shots fired.
When they arrived, they found Mullen, 27, of the 300 block of South Dyer Street, in a gray 2013 Nissan Sentra. Mullen, the lone occupant in the vehicle, had been struck by multiple gunshots to the upper part of his body, Butts said.
After initial treatment at Sentara Albemarle Medical Center, Mullen was airlifted to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Butts said police had no update on Mullen’s condition and a Sentara spokeswoman said Wednesday the hospital has no record of him as a patient.
