A 32-year-old Elizabeth City man with a prior criminal record is due in district court Monday on charges of threatening to use firearms in two separate holdup attempts.

Dante Alexander, of the 500 block of York Street, is charged with attempted armed robbery and possession of a firearm by a felon, according to magistrate warrants.

In one incident, Alexander is accused of threatening to use a firearm, possibly a BB gun, on June 8 to try to take cash from a person. In the second incident, Alexander is accused of threatening to use a shotgun on June 12 to try and take property from a person.

Pasquotank sheriff’s deputies arrested Alexander on June 18. He appeared before District Judge Eula Reid on June 21 and the Public Defender’s Office was appointed to represent him.

Alexander remained in custody at Albemarle District Jail over the weekend in lieu of a $203,000 secured bond.

According to magistrate's warrants, deputies found a shotgun in Alexander’s possession, a criminal offense because of his conviction in August 2013 on a charge of conspiring to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon. N.C. Public Safety records show Alexander served approximately 4½ years in prison for that conviction.

Public Safety records also show Alexander has convictions in Pasquotank dating back to 2000. The charges include common law robbery, assault, felony breaking and entering, driving while impaired, larceny, misdemeanor breaking and entering, possession of illegal drugs and possession of illegal drug paraphernalia.

More recently, Alexander was charged with misdemeanor possession of illegal drugs, possession of illegal drug paraphernalia and driving while license revoked. A magistrate’s warrant states the offenses were committed on March 27. Alexander was released after posting a $6,000 secured bond.

Alexander also has a pending charge of misdemeanor possession of illegal drugs in Currituck County. That offense occurred on Feb. 26, according to records.
