Elizabeth City police are seeking a city man in connection with the shooting of a motorist on Massachusetts Avenue last month.

Warrants have been issued for Stephon Trevor Ellis, 30, charging him with the June 4 shooting of Darryl Kevin Mullen Jr., the Elizabeth City Police Department said in a press release Tuesday.

Ellis, whose last known address was 810 North Road St., Elizabeth City, will be charged with attempted first degree murder, assault with deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, discharging a weapon into an occupied property causing serious bodily injury and felony possession of a firearm by a felon.

Officer Lamont Butts of the city police department said Ellis is known to travel between Elizabeth City and Kings County, New York, and may be traveling in a dark-colored — possibly black — 2008 Jaguar XJ with the personalized North Carolina license plate MOOLA.

“If you encounter Mr. Ellis, please use extreme caution because he is known to be in possession of a firearm,” Butts said.

According to Butts, police responded to the 600 block of Massachusetts Avenue shortly before 5:30 p.m. on June 4 following a report of shots fired.

When they arrived, they found Mullen, 27, of the 300 block of South Dyer Street, in a gray 2013 Nissan Sentra. Mullen, the lone occupant in the vehicle, had been struck by multiple gunshots to the upper part of his body, Butts said.

After initial treatment at Sentara Albemarle Medical Center, Mullen was airlifted to the Virginia hospital. Butts could not be immediately reached Tuesday for an update on Mullen’s medical condition.

Anyone with information about Ellis’ whereabouts is urged to phone police at 335-4321 or Crime Line at 335-5555.
