A new College of The Albemarle initiative known as Alumni Connect is beginning to build an alumni chapter for the community college.
The point of the initiative is to identify COA alumni and encourage them to become more involved in promoting the college, its programs and activities.
Alumni Connect is being run by Lyndasu Wynegar, wife of COA President Robert Wynegar, along with Amy Alcocer, COA’s public information officer.
In a presentation to the COA Board of Trustees on June 19, Lyndasu Wynegar credited Alcocer with developing the Alumni Connect initiative. It’s primary purpose, Wynegar said, is to link up with COA alumni and encourage them to become an active part of the COA community.
Alcocer said the initiative is designed to reconnect alumni to the college, involve businesses and promote COA in the community.
The initiative is receiving kudos from COA trustees.
“I think that is wonderful,” outgoing Board of Trustees Chairman Paul O’Neal said after hearing the presentation. “I think that was well thought out.”
Alcocer said trustees have been very supportive of the effort. She said she appreciates trustees’ promotion of COA by doing things such as wearing a COA pin on their lapels.
As part of the Alumni Connect initiative a contest is underway to name a member of the trustee board as “Board Member of the Year.” Trustees are being asked to identify alumni, hand them a COA lapel pin and gain contact information so college staff can connect with them. The winner of the contest will be the trustee who pins and logs the most alumni connections between now and the end of the year.
The focus of the contest is to promote trustees talking about COA in the community — something trustees already do but are being encouraged to do even more.
In conjunction with the Alumni Connect initiative the college has pressed 300 new COA lapel pins that have been redesigned, including making them smaller than a previous version.
An Alumni Connect social is also being planned for December. Officials said the event will further cement the connections among alumni as well as the connections between alumni and COA staff.
