Joy'siah Austin, 3, of Elizabeth City, sits for a free eye exam by Edenton Lions Club member John Guard at Knobbs Creek Recreation Center, Monday. The Lions were participating with the Albemarle Alliance For Children and Families to provide the screenings. Guard is using a device called a spot vision screener, which he said costs around $6900, to tests children's eyes. The device features a small window with blinking red and blue lights that a person being examined stares at while the lights are turned out. While not meant as a substitute for an eye examination by an ophthalmologist, the device can tell the screener if a person has certain vision problems, such as myopia.
