Approximately 1,500 gallons of untreated wastewater was discharged into Charles Creek on Sunday, the city of Elizabeth City reported Monday.

The discharge of untreated wastewater into Charles Creek, which flows into the Pasquotank River, happened near the intersection of Parkview Drive and Rivershore Road, a press release from the city states.

The N.C. Division of Environmental Quality was notified of the discharge and is reviewing the matter, the city’s release states.

Under state law, cities, animal operations, industries and others that operate waste-handling systems are required to notify the public whenever a waste spill of at least 1,000 gallons reaches surface waters.
