A Virginia man already facing a driving while impaired charge in Pasquotank County was arrested Monday after Elizabeth City police say he fired gunshots in a city neighborhood.
Robert Charles Knight Jr., 35, of the 2200 block of Pulaski Street, Portsmouth, was charged with discharging a firearm, police said.
No injuries were reported in the incident, police said.
Police spokeswoman Barbara Morgan said officers received a report of shots fired near West Main and Ashe streets about 10:56 a.m. When police arrived, they found Knight, questioned him and learned he had fired a handgun, Morgan said.
Morgan did not release further details about why Knight allegedly fired the handgun.
Besides the discharge of a firearm charge, Knight is also charged with possession of between half an ounce and 1½ ounces of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, Morgan said.
Knight was released after posting a $3,500 secured bond. Knight is due in Pasquotank District Court on the charges Feb. 12.
Pasquotank District Court records show Knight has a pending DWI charge in the county stemming from his arrest by the N.C. Highway Patrol on Sept. 1. Knight is due in court on Feb. 15 for that charge.
