Currituck man dies in US 17 wreck in Perquimans

HERTFORD — A 21-year-old Currituck man died in a single-car accident on U.S. Highway 17 in Perquimans County early Thursday morning.

Chan­dler Daven­port died in the ac­ci­dent on U.S. 17 about a tenth of a mile south of the Perquimans-Pasquotank county line, the N.C. High­way Pa­trol said.

Daven­port’s 2007 Mazda was north­bound on U.S. 17 shortly af­ter mid­night when it ran off the right side of the road at a slow speed and came to rest in a large ditch, the pa­trol said.

A 23-year-old pas­sen­ger in the ve­hi­cle was trans­ported to an area hos­pi­tal but did not suf­fer se­ri­ous in­juries in the ac­ci­dent, the pa­trol said.

The pa­trol re­ported Daven­port’s ve­hi­cle sus­tained only mi­nor dam­age in the accident.

Troopers are waiting for autopsy and toxicology reports before commenting on the possible cause of the accident.
