Parker wins EC mayor's race


Mayor-elect Bettie Parker raises her arms in victory as she enters the Island Breeze Grill where her supporters were waiting for her to arrive Tuesday night. Parker won Elizabeth City's mayoral race on Tuesday, becoming the first woman ever elected the city's mayor.

Bettie Parker became the first woman ever elected mayor of Elizabeth City on Tuesday, defeating her opponent Sam Davis by more than 823 votes.

Parker collected 1,572 votes, or 67.55 percent of all votes cast, to Davis’ 749 or 32 percent, results from the N.C. Board of Elections’ website show.

Parker will be sworn in as mayor in December, succeeding Joe Peel, who elected not to seek re-election.
