KINSTON, N.C. (AP) -- Jesse Hodges homered and had two hits as the Myrtle Beach Pelicans topped the Down East Wood Ducks 8-3 on Sunday.

Myrtle Beach went up 5-0 in the third after Eloy Jimenez hit a two-run home run as part of a four-run inning.

Following the big inning, the Wood Ducks cut into the deficit in the bottom of the frame when Arturo Lara hit a solo home run and Matt Lipka hit a sacrifice fly.

The Pelicans later added single runs in the fifth, seventh and eighth innings to secure the victory.

Dakota Mekkes (1-0) got the win with two innings of scoreless relief while Down East starter Jacob Shortslef (0-2) took the loss in the Carolina League game.

Lara homered and singled, driving in two runs for the Wood Ducks.

With the win, Myrtle Beach improved to 9-3 against Down East this season.
