Using mystery of God to explain flawed leaders perilous
Saturday, January 12, 2019
The Biblical King David was God’s political representative on earth, but when he sinned, he was divinely denounced (through a prophet of God, not an enemy) and punished. Furthermore, David’s morally weak and mentally unstable predecessor, King Saul, had also been God’s anointed one.
It’s entirely possible that the mysterious Lord would select a morally flawed individual to be his earthly representative, but this should not be taken to mean that God condones immorality and/or amorality, or that criticism of this individual necessarily shows hostility to God.
If we’re going to retreat into the territory of mystery, we ought to at least be brave enough to retreat till it hurts.
