Dorothy Jean Hopkins, as she appeared for her senior photograph in the 1955 Elizabeth High School Yearbook "Spotlight." Hopkins, salutatorian of her high school class, attended University of North Carolina. She graduated UNC in 1959 with a degree in education.
In February 1966, Lyndon B. Johnson received a letter from Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Merriman Smith. He was writing to the president as a father who had just lost his eldest son in Vietnam. In the letter, the president read of a young mother in Elizabeth City whose life had just changed.
