CAMDEN – A new business specializing in custom-designed flooring has opened in Camden.

Inner Banks Interiors, located at 175 U.S. Highway 158 West, is a flooring design center that sells all types of flooring.

The shop held a grand opening Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

A primary service of the business is design. Kayla Eller and her husband, Lance Gregory, both have experience working in design for a tile manufacturer based in Charlotte. Eller has a degree in interior design.

The slower pace of Albemarle life appealed to the couple, and they also wanted to be closer to family. Eller is from Virginia Beach, Va., and Gregory also is from Virginia.

Charlotte is a nice place to visit, but the couple say they prefer living in a smaller community.

“That's another reason we wanted to move,” Eller said.

They came to the area about two years, and it has taken a year to get the building ready, she said.

Eller said she and Gregory had seen the building for sale and noticed it had been sitting there for a while. She said her husband had the idea of opening a boutique shop in the building.

“And it kind of spiraled from there,” Eller said.

It turned out there was much more work involved in getting the structure ready for the new business than they had realized. The building is historic – it's nearly 200 years old – and there was a lot of work that needed to be done.

Renovations that they needed to install included new windows and a heating, ventilation and cooling system.

“A lot more than we thought,” Eller noted.

The building previously housed an antiques shop.

The main focus of the business is the flooring design center, and the shop sells all types of flooring. Eller said she will sit down with a customer to design a bathroom or other room.

Downstairs will be a boutique that showcases local artists' artwork, she said.

There'a also a classroom in the back where she will teach do-it-yourself classes in flooring installation and also host girls night out type classes for various crafts.

“It will be a fun place to design something of your own,” she said of the classroom.

Gregory will help Eller run the shop and is the outside sales representative for the company.

Inner Banks Interiors is open Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. on the first and third Saturday of each month.

On other Saturdays and Sundays the business will be open by appointment only for design services and classes.
