On the way to mail packages for Christmas, Dawn Kidd decided to embark on a new business.

Kidd said she realized there was a need for a place to offer shipping services at the north end of Elizabeth City where she lives. Kidd drove into the parking lot at University Plaza on North Road Street and saw a vacant space perfect for launching her new business.

Kidd said she and her husband, Barret, decided to open their own store, EC Mailbox Center, which is not a franchise.

The business opened on April 16 and maintains hours from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays.

“Everyone is thrilled we are on this end of town,” said Kidd.

Kidd said the EC Mailbox Center offers shipping services through the U.S. Postal Service, FedEx, UPS and DHL.

“We are also a notary,” said Kidd. “We make keys, banners, posters, pictures, copies, faxing and passports.”

What’s more, EC Mailbox also sells sundries and provides shredding services.

Both Kidd and her husband are originally from California. The couple was living in Norfolk, Virginia, until Barret retired from the U.S. Navy, and they decided to move to Elizabeth City in 2005. Barret currently works at the Coast Guard Base in Elizabeth City.

“We just liked the small-town feel,” said Kidd. “We wanted to live on the water.”

Kidd said she had a career in real estate for most of her adult life.

“This is my first business I ever owned,” she said.

Kidd is an active member at First Baptist Church in Elizabeth City.

“Our church is a big part of our life,” she said.

Kidd said she is involved with “Room at the Inn,” which provides shelter to those in need of it during the winter months.

“It has been a great success,” she said.

Kidd said she enjoys listening to her husband play piano and sing in local bands. The couple have two cats and a dog.

“I just hope we continue to be a blessing to the people in the area,” said Kidd. “If it is a success we might open another store.”

EC mailbox Center will hold a grand opening event featuring music and food on June 7 at 5 p.m.
