CAMDEN — A second political newcomer has filed for one of three open seats on the Camden County Board of Education in this fall’s general election.

Roger Morgan filed Tuesday at the Camden Board of Elections Office for the one of the seats currently held by incumbents Jason Banks, Sissy Aydlett and Chris Wilson. Morgan joins fellow first-time candidate Chris Purcell, who filed for one of the seats on Monday.

Elsewhere, George A. Nelson filed Tuesday as a candidate for the at-large seat on the Edenton-Chowan Board of Education. He joins Maxine Mason, who filed for the seat last week. Both are seeking to succeed school board incumbent Glorious Elliott, who has announced she won’t be seeking re-election.

While a newcomer to politics, Morgan is very familiar with the Camden County Schools.

Originally from Raleigh, Morgan, 55, was employed by the Camden school district for 19 years. In all, he retired after 21 years as a teacher and nine as an administrator.

Morgan taught physical education at Grandy Primary School for 12 years, was an assistant principal at Grandy and served two years as director of transportation for the Camden County Schools.

“I always said when I was working that when I was retired I would run for the board of education,” Morgan said Tuesday. “I think educators will make excellent board members because they understand the real world of education.”

Morgan said he believes Camden County already has a good school district. If he’s elected, he said he would work to maintain its high quality of education.

Of the three incumbents on the Camden school board, only Banks has stated his intention to seek re-election. Aydlett and Wilson so far haven’t said whether they’ll seek new terms.

Others who have filed for seats on the Edenton-Chowan school board are incumbent Gil Burroughs and challenger Nancy Heiniger for District 3, Seat 1, and incumbent Ricky Browder for District 2, Seat 2.

Filing for the four Edenton-Chowan school board seats began June 27 and will end on Friday, July 27. Filing for the three Camden seats began Monday and will end on Tuesday, July 31.
